I Am The Light of the World -- John 8
In this chapter of John's gospel, Jesus turns the tables on the Pharisees and scribes who try to trap him by bringing him a woman caught in adultery. He makes another of His great "I AM" statements when he says, "I am the light of the world." This leads to a debate with the Pharisees, and as a result, "many came to believe in Him: (v. 30).
Next, Jesus continues to challenge the Jews who had believed in him, leading to another debate that culminates in Jesus specifically and expressly claiming to be divine: "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." (v. 58). Not only does Jesus make this extraordinary claim, but He communicates it clearly to his listeners, who finally understand what He is saying, assume He is guilty of blasphemy, and immediately pick up stones to throw at Him--because the penalty for blasphemy was stoning under the Old Testament law.
But who is really blaspheming whom? Pastor Andrew Gretzinger of Good Shepard Presbyterian Church in Valparaiso, Indiana joins us for a spirited and wide-ranging discussion of this remarkable text.
